The Science Of Prader Willi

Posted by Whitman Kerric Donaldson, 07 August 2010 · 425 views

In my gallery, is the official online addition of my first graphic novella. In it I carefully laid out a 50-page graphic novella as a series of questions and answers between a character named Kyle—a thinly veiled version of myself—and Kyle's parents that describe what it means to have Prader-Willi Syndrome. Using the traditional comic book format, I communicate this information and the impact that the condition has on Kyle and his family through idiosyncratic people drawings layered with intense and sensuous colors often found in comics. I have employed the traditional balloons coming out of the characters’ mouths for the touching dialogue that takes place between Kyle and his parents. The character's matter-of-fact language expresses Kyle's parents' loving, supportive tenderness towards their son as well as Kyle’s own curiosity about and acceptance of his disability.

It also will be feautured in the next Creativity Explored Show "And Then...." with other pieces from the other artists at the studio. "And Then...." focuses on sequential art in which several pictures connect to each other to tell a story or to simply portray a progression. This art form, traditionally called cartoons or comics in the United States and bandes dessiness in France, has expanded beyond the realm of “the funnies” or comic strips to include serious narrative, such as the graphic novel. Increasingly, the comics have gained respect and a world wide following, as historietas (little stories), fumetti (little puffs of smoke) and manga (nonsensical pictures) have become accepted as legitimate art forms. Although sequential art can be a challenging form for artists to pursue, it can also offer rich artistic expression for both the artist and the viewer.
