About Me

  1. With the downs above Ventnor in the distance, Shanklin Station glows in the late Dusk. The Sun has gone, the temperature has dropped and the lights are on. A few passengers are waiting for the train back to Ryde Pier Head in the cold evening. Shanklin is the end of the line for trains on Island Line, but the railway once carried on another 5 x miles or so to Ventnor.

  2. The railway from Merstone to Ventnor was the first route to close on the Isle of Wight. The once quite scenic route last saw a train almost 70 x years to the day this picture was taken in September 2022. The pictures shows the Southern (Ventnor end) of St Lawrence Tunnel ( sometimes know as High Hat Tunnel) as it looks today.

  3. The Sun sinks slowly across the West of the Isle of Wight as seen from Culver Down in the East of the Island.

  4. The Sun is setting to the West over the Isle of Wight and casting its rays over the Island. The view from Bembridge Fort on Culver Down.

  5. This picture was taken at 21:43 hrs and it is a night shot. This can be seen by looking at the illuminated neon signs of the “New Village Inn” on the left of the picture. This photo captures a bright flash of lightning which temporarily turns the night into day!

  6. The penultimate service on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway makes it’s way in light steam back towards Havenstreet from Smallbrook Junction on a lovely Summer’s evening! The tail light on the back of the train will soon vanish around the curve and tranquility will soon return to Smallbrook Junction.

  7. The cows in the field next to Wooton Station on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, show a complete lack of interest in the Shunting signal which allows the train engine to run round its train!

  8. Class 484 001 approaches Yarbridge between Brading and Shanklin on Island Line on a Down service to Shanklin on a Spring afternoon.

  9. The "Down Starter" Signal (Semaphore) at Ryde St John's Road Station on the Isle of Wight Island Line shows the route ahead to Shanklin is clear! A wonderful atmospheric shot of Island Line by night!

  10. About 4 x miles of the Solent separate the City of Portsmouth from the Town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight. This is the view across the Solent towards Portsmouth on a beautiful and sunny late Winter/Early Spring day!

  11. A cold January evening on the Isle of Wight, sees two passengers waiting for the train back to Ryde from Brading on Island Line. As part of major upgrade work on Island Line, Brading Station has been upgraded to have 2 x operational platforms again for the first time since the late 1980s.

  12. Well, not quite! An Island Line Class 484 approaches Ryde Esplanade from Ryde Pier Head and in doing so disturbs all the seagulls taking shelter from the high tide and choppy waters!

  13. High tide at Ryde Esplanade on the Isle of Wight sees the arrival of the Hovercraft from its short crossing from the city of Portsmouth in the background (about 4 x miles away).

  14. A thunderstorm has passed over the Isle of Wight and the setting sun drops through the receding storm clouds. View from Bembridge Fort at Culver Down on the Isle of Wight.

  15. Wight Ryder I sails out of Portsmouth Harbour again, against the backdrop of a Winter late Sunset over Gosport forming the 16:15 sailing to Ryde Pier Head.

  16. MV Victoria of Wight has just docked at the Portsmouth Gunwharf Terminal after is crossing from Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight. The Spinnaker Tower lights a strong contrast against the dark sky of Winter's night in Portsmouth.

  17. The Sun sets over the Isle of Wight and the Solent in Portsmouth . The old submarine escape training facility tower at the now closed HMS Dolphin facility adds to the atmosphere.

  18. It is a cold but Sunny Winter morning in Ryde on the Isle of Wight. Unit 484 003 crosses Ryde Pier forming the 08:45 service to Shanklin.

  19. Due to shipping movements in and out of Portsmouth Harbour, Wight Ryder 2 had to make slightly longer sailing to the East of Spitbank Fort on the 15:45 crossing from Ryde Pier Head to Portsmouth. The long and slower crossing allowed for this beautiful image to be capture of the Sunset above the Fort and the Isle of Wight.

  20. The Sun has gone for the day and the last rays are seen from Ryde Pier on the Isle of Wight looking toward Fawley Oil Refinery to the West. A very nice view to end a day's work on the Isle of Wight.

  21. The Sun is shining across the Solent (between Portsmouth and Ryde Isle of Wight) and catches a yacht in its rays.

  22. The lights across the pier at Ryde shining against the rapidly darkening sky.

  23. Dusk is gathering as the Sun sets in the West as seen from the Waterfront at Ryde on the Isle of Wight.

  24. The last rays of the sun light the clouds above Ryde Pier on the Isle of Wight.

  25. The last surviving 02 Tank has had a hard day and is now being prepared for a good night's rest on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.
