South Western Railway Class 450 Desiro 450 030 waits at London Waterloo to form the 2L49 16:45 to Basingstoke. The Driver has not yet arrived, but in the background an unidentified Class 458 Juniper arrives from Windsor & Elton Riverside. With the downs above Ventnor in the distance, Shanklin Station glows in the late Dusk. The Sun has gone, the temperature has dropped and the lights are on. A few passengers are waiting for the train back to Ryde Pier Head in the cold evening. Shanklin is the end of the line for trains on Island Line, but the railway once carried on another 5 x miles or so to Ventnor.

With the obligatory London Red Bus (albeit a modern single-decker) - and of course, a young pretty girl who just happened to be standing there at the time!!-

Look for the place with the stone archway entrance to the left of the escalater - (which was out of service...) Now a currency exchange kiosk. In the days before next day deliveries to your home address, the Parcel Office at London Victoria would have been as busy and bustling as the rest of the station.-

On a dull Summer day, with a stopping train bound for London Waterloo in the background, a Buddleia bush in full beautiful bloom adorns the now abandoned Alton Platform. Buddleia grows like crazy and has beautiful and fragrant flowers which attract bees and other insects. It is very common across the UK railway network!
