    Ryde Pier

An Island Line Class 484 has just left Ryde Esplanade on the way to meet the ferry at Ryde Pier Head. This unusual view is taken from Union Street in Ryde and shows a wet day across the Solent, but the city of Portsmouth is visible through the rain.

  2. Island Line’s 484 003 is waiting for departure time at Brading en route to Shanklin on a February evening.

  3. Unit 484 001 has the Signal (as shown by the “Off Indicator”) to depart with 2D23 18:00 Ryde Esplanade to Shanklin service on Island Line. A beautiful study of 484 001 in the low sunlight.

  4. A beautiful study of Island Line’s Unit 484 002 waiting at Ryde St Johns Road Station with the setting Sun casting its golden rays on the train and the wet track. After 2 x days of heavy rain, the track about a mile away is heavily flooded and sadly the train will be going nowhere for the rest of the day.

  5. Class 484 001 approaches Yarbridge between Brading and Shanklin on Island Line on a Down service to Shanklin on a Spring afternoon.

  6. Well, not quite! An Island Line Class 484 approaches Ryde Esplanade from Ryde Pier Head and in doing so disturbs all the seagulls taking shelter from the high tide and choppy waters!

  7. High tide at Ryde Esplanade on the Isle of Wight sees the arrival of the Hovercraft from its short crossing from the city of Portsmouth in the background (about 4 x miles away).

  8. After some 31 x years on Island Line after some 51 x years before that under the streets of London, Class 483 Unit 006 waits to go into a happy retirement on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. The newcomer Class 484 Unit 004 waits to shunt into the Sidings at Ryde St Johns Road.
  9. A Class 484 alongside a withdrawn Class 483 at Ryde St Johns clearly shows how much bigger they are! Class 483 were originally built for the "Deep" level "Tube" in London and came across to the Isle of Wight in 1989. The Class 484 worked originally on the Sub Surface "Underground" in London and arrived on the Island in 2021 to take over! The 484 is much bigger in height!

    Class 484

A Class 484 on test at Fareham on a hot sunny afternoon. These trains are replacing the old 483 Units that have carried out over 30 x years of service on the Isle of Wight (after 50 x years on the London Underground).
