Another awesome train at Kokura Station. (I used to be a train-spotter, you know? Does it show?!!) ? ? ?

Shinkansen  新幹線 (pronounced: Shin-Kan-Sen) refers to the rail system, not the trains that run on it!

新幹線 translates, word-for-word as "New trunk line" - in other words, it's a dedicated high speed rail network.

When I was in school, we used to call the trains that ran on the Shinkansen, "Bullet Trains" (Some people still do!)

Here's an East-bound or "Up" train at Kokura Station in Kita Kyushu - on a very brief stop before hurtling off towards Tokyo.

City center to city center in less time than it takes to fly, in most cases! (Bearing in mind that you don't find too many airports right in the middle of the city center, right?!!) :rofl:

Now... We're trying to reduce our carbon footprint and the number of miles that we fly, aren't we? I do realize that Japan is not the only country in the world to have a high speed rail network. However, bearing in mind the mountainous terrain of most of the country - and the shear comprehensiveness of the network - I say that the the Shinkansen and the trains that run on it is one of the great wonders of the world!!
