From the album: Drawings and sketches
Both of these were done as exercises back in 2005 when I was trying to get back into art after a thirty-year break. Both exercises came from a great book for beginners, called "The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. And here's a link to her website: https://www.drawright.com/ Drawing number 1 was a pretty fair attempt at a self-portrait, I thought. (You will notice that I still had a little bit of hair around my ears and the back of my neck in those days!) Number 2, the "upside-down" drawing was a particular revelation for me! Basically, you had to turn the book upside-down, (thus confusing the right side of the brain,) and then copy the drawing just like that. Finally, having cheated the right side of your brain out of its tendency to make you draw things in its own stylized images and just copy what was in front of you, I was quite surprised by the results... Never mind... Betty Edwards can explain it a whole lot better than I can!1 point -

Shortly after take-off from NAIA on an evening flight to Bangkok. I was caught by surprise with this beautiful clear air view of Manila... Normally, it is either too cloudy or two hazy to be worth even trying to get a decent aerial photo of Manila... So, yes, a big surprise and a mad rush to get my cellphone out!!1 point -

High rise buildings on the banks of the Jao Praya River. Two of the buildings on the river bank are the Millenium Hilton Bangkok and The Peninsula Bangkok hotels. (All very expensive properties!!) Photo taken from the Saphan Taksin Bridge. I didn't have my tripod with me but, after many attempts, I actually managed to get this shot without any camera shake. 'Pure luck in the end - but quite an achievement with all the heavy trucks thundering by and shaking the bridge every few seconds! (I had a well-earned beer or six, after taking this one!!) ???1 point -

My second dog, Bruce. An RSPCA resue dog, he spent many a happy year in the fairly large garden of our old house in Bordon, Hampshire, (UK) Bruce was a guard dog par-excellence - but at the same time, he was also unbelievably good with children. I remember hearing a whimpering noise one time... I went into the sitting-room to find my then 2 year-old daughter sitting on his back twisting and pulling his long fur. Not even a warning growl - he just lay there whimpering. He wouldn't even stand up for fear of tipping my daughter off his back and hurting her...1 point -

Shoubi, a really soppy Pit Bull Terrier bitch that I bought from one of my neighbors here in the Philippines. (I had been taking care of her for the previous year, in order to save her from being kept couped up in a tiny little cage... By the time her previous owners decided to sell her, I had already become quite attached to Shoubi and I couldn't stand the thought of her being bought by someone else and spending the rest of her life on a short piece of chain - or in another small cage...) Eddie Boy is the guy who looks after Shoubi for me when I am away and he often takes her for walks even when I am home. I think Shoubi loves Eddie more than me - but that's OK... Just as long as she is happy!1 point -

One of the guard dogs at the Madilosa family residence in Davao del Sur, Mindanao, Philippines. (I sometimes stay with the madilosa family when I am in that part of the country.) Total "askal" (aso kalye - lit. "street dog") this one! Very nervous at first and took a long time before it really got used to me. I was eventually able to take it for short walks but it really didn't like being too far from familiar territory1 point -

My mate, Tim Penycate's dog. Another RSPCA rescue dog. Not a pedigree but pretty well pure German Shepherd. (I'm not sure where the crooked tail comes from but it in no way alters the fact that Benj is one of the most handsome dogs that I have ever come across!) Here he is, full of energy and really enjoying a day out on M.o.D land at Whitehill in Hampshire, UK1 point -
