These are actually wind turbines - not windmills!! They are designed and used for generating renewable energy in the form of electricity from the wind.

As opposed to "windmills," which, as the name suggests, were used for milling grain in times gone by...


A windmill is a structure that converts wind power into rotational energy by means of vanes called sails or blades, specifically to mill grain (gristmills), but the term is also extended to wind pumps, wind turbines and other applications.
