The painting that almost ended my my enthusiasm for the hobby. It took so long to complete, I almost gave-up the whole idea of even trying to be an artist. Started some time in 2011 - and finished in May 2012!! A beautiful Filipina girl from the Pretty Po Kami facebook group page1 point -

My first ever painting that was not based on a photograph! This is a purely fictitious scene that I just concocted-up in my imagination. It is supposed to be a view through an old country cottage window, somewhere in the South of England on a warm, sunny morning. The garden pool has some koi swimming around in it and the bench is just waiting for me to take out my coffee and sit on it to watch the koi! Internationally renowned photographer David Noton very kindly gave me permission to use his photograph Portrait of a girl, Vang Vieng, Laos as the basis for a practise painting - and I did warn him that the results of my efforts would probably end-up bearing very little resemblance to his excellent photo. I wasn't wrong!! If you check-out the link, above, you will see that the subject of the photo was a child - whereas my feable attempt has made her look like a young lady. Still, even though this looks nothing like the girl in the photo, I kind of like her strange expression - and I did have fun trying with this one! Purely from imagination. The feathers are well 'over the top.' It's a kind of self-portrait... Kind of how I would like to imagine myself as a native North American Indian with my very own style of feathery headdress... Loads and loads of feathers and colors all over the place! The final version of my Feathery Head Dress painting. After I uploaded the earlier version, I realized that the ear looked awful, so I covered it up with an extension of the head band, to which the lower feathers are attached.1 point -

From a photo of Mita Rani Das After laying-out the initial colour scheme, I brushed over the different colours with a soft brush dipped in clean water, in order to make a sort of watercolor-type background wash. This was the painting at the end of the second session. Just starting to add some detail and give it some form. At this stage, the painting is more like a childish colored crayon sketch - but I have high hopes for this one when it is finished!1 point -
From the album: Have a go!
This is the first stage of the painting. I made the background color scheme by blocking-in the main colors with soft pastels on heavy, course-grained watercolor paper - and then going over the different areas with clean water on a paint brush in order to make a watercolor wash effect. I am basing this painting on a really nice photo by Jim Winsor. http://www.facebook.com/jim.winsor.75 Photo used as reference material with Jim's very kind permission. The original photograph on which this painting will be based, can be down-loaded at: http://www.photoartf...ailway-cp-8856/ The photo was taken in October 2011 and Jim writes: "This was so far the most significant snowfall we have had yet this year. I braved the elements today to capture this rare for me image of such a beauty. I arrived at this location and it was dull and overcast which soon gave way to a lite blowing snowfall. This beauty could be heard off in the distance and low and behold out of the blowing snow she came."© © Jim Winsor

And here it is - the finished painting... As expected, when I was able to buy some Schmincke soft pastels, they adheared very well to the underpainting. Had I not had access to these ultra soft pastels, I would have had to abandon the painting at stage seven, when I probly would have destroyed the thing as I was not really satisfied with it... This is not a briliantly fantastic landscape but I am reasonably happy with it. I am not very good at this particular genre, (I much prefer doing portraits,) but this is probably the first half-decent landscape that I have managed to do. I enjoyed the challenge - and, hopefully, the next one will be better!1 point -

Not quite what I had hoped it would be. (I much prefer Benjamin - One as a painting.) Oh well, you can't win them all! The finished painting. Not quite what I had hoped it would be but, anyway, it was useful practise and I hope the next one will be better! I was reasonably happy with the way Jelyn, (the younger of the two girls,) turned out. I like a bit of 'style' or 'artistic licence' in a painting and, no matter how good I may get in the future, I don't think that I will ever attempt to do "photo reallism" in a painting. I really admire the skill and patience of those who do that kind of art but, for myself, I'd rather use my camera for photo reallism...1 point -

Now that I had solved the buckling problem, I just sprayed some fixative over the whole thing, waited 20 minutes for it to dry and then started to add further layers of pastel to start filling in some of the detail... I was unable to bring any fixative with me because you are not allowed to bring aerosols or even solvents in bottles with you on the plane... not even in your check-in baggage. However, I was lucky in that, when I arrived on the ship, I found out that we would be in port for some time and I was able to go up the road to buy some proper fixative. Had this not been the case, I was planning to make my own onboard - using some ordinary wood varnish, highly diluted with alcohol. (I have no idea how that would have worked out, never having tried it before - but like I said before, if budget or availability of resources are stretched, you have to make do with what you've got. But don't let that put you off painting!)1 point
