    Gosport Ferry

The 23:15 ferry for the short trip across Portsmouth Harbour to Gosport waits for departure.

  2. It is late dusk in Portsmouth as the Gosport ferry heads across the harbour on its short journey from Portsmouth Harbour to Gosport. A Portsmouth Harbour Pilot launch crosses in the opposite direction.

  3. Wight Ryder II arrives at Ryde Pier Head from Portsmouth Harbour, ready to go back with 23:10 sailing back from Ryde Pier Head. This is the last sailing of the day. The Covid pandemic affected public transport quite badly in the UK in 2020 and 2021 and mostly (but not all) it has returned to what it was in 2019, but it has been a slow process. In March 2023 Wightlink (the operator) restored a lot of its services lost during that terrible period for the world. The restoration of these services are VERY welcome!

  4. A view from outside the Still and West pub in Old Portsmouth looking out across the Solent. The Isle of Wight is in the distance and the sun is setting over what was HMS Dolphin ( The Royal Navy’s Submarine training location until 1999).

  5. Wight Ryder 1 arrives in Portsmouth Harbour on the 15:45 sailing from Ryde Pier Head.

  6. Wightlink Car Ferry, MV St Clare sails out of Portsmouth Harbour on its way to Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight. The backdrop if Gosport and the old HMS Dolphin buildings.

  7. HMS Severn (one of the Royal Navy’s River Class ships) slips quietly out of Portsmouth Harbour in the Sunset.

  8. A little later than the previous picture, Wight Ryder 2 is now travelling along the channel (a “Port” side marker buoy can be seen) to its dock in Portsmouth Harbour. The Sun has nearly gone and the already sub-zero temperatures start to fall further!

  9. Seen from the Sun Deck at the stern of Wight Ryder 2 the Sun sets across the Isle of Wight.

  10. The early morning sunshine and perfect blue sky illuminates HMS Warrior and the town of Gosport on the opposite side of Portsmouth Harbour. This view is from the area known as “The Hard” which is just adjacent to Portsmouth’s “Historic Dockyard.”

  11. HMS Queen Elizabeth arrived back from a trip to the USA and sits alongside her dock in Portsmouth Harbour. In the meantime, Wightlink’s Wight Ryder II sets sail on the 16:15 sailing from Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde.

  12. Sitting on the railings alongside “The Hard” in Portsmouth Harbour, a Black Headed Gull (probably with its Winter plumage) looks alert. HMS Warrior provides the backdrop.

  13. The Gosport Ferry sails frequently across Portsmouth Harbour to and from Gosport. Spirit of Gosport is seen here on a mild October morning docking at Portsmouth Harbour.

  14. The MV Normandie sails past the Gosport Ferry terminal at Portsmouth Harbour on the 08:15 sailing from Portsmouth to Caen on a beautiful September morning.

  15. HMS Warrior is anchored in Portsmouth Harbour and although still technically a “Royal Navy” ship, it is now a museum. The ship is captured here at low tide on a lovely September morning.

  16. The last ocean going paddle steamer, the PV Waverley spends it life providing pleasure cruises around the UK. Here she is in the calm waters of the Solent heading to Portsmouth Harbour ready for a cruise around the Isle of Wight. This picture was taken from aboard Wight Ryder I crossing to the Isle of Wight, and there is a bit of grime on the windows!

  17. Wight Ryder II arrives at Ryde Pier in calm waters on the 15:15 Wightlink sailing across the Solent from Portsmouth Harbour on a sunny September afternoon. It will now form the 15:45 sailing back.
