If anyone is actually making any money out of selling their art - and especially if they are making a living at it, then I would love to hear from you! Personally, I just do it for fun. But, then again, it would be rather nice to get a little bit of beer money for all of my efforts!!

Ah, OK!! Thanks for that. ('Looks like a minor typo in the topic title, then...) I was just trying to get some activity going in the forums... Don't ask me why but for some reason, the image view counters and a whole lot of other stuff with the site will not update unless we get some activity by logged-in members in the forums? I have been told by the developers of the software on which the site runs, that I can set up some "cron jobs" on the server. Whatever that means?!! But that sort of stuff is all a bit over my head... I have also been busy in the forums deleting some old dead and spammy links. Apparently, Google doesn't like that sort of stuff. (It's probably one reason why artfreaks.com has all but disappeared off the radar...) I've got a lot of work to do there, as the site has been around for quite a while now and it accumulated a lot of junk in the past. We will get there in the end!

I already have a topic in the Forums on the subject of some good photography book recommendations, so I am not going to duplicate what I have already written there. Of course, the best way to start taking great photos is to get out there with your camera and start shooting! However, most of us can also use a bit of a grounding in the basics - or even some of the more advanced techniques. And there is nothing like a good book on a cold, wet and windy day, now, is there?! If any member would like to share the details of any great photography books that they have come across, they are encouraged to do so here - either by way of a reply to this article or by publishing a new article of their own. Members can also, of course, start a new topic in the artfreaks.com forums, if they prefer: https://www.artfreaks.com/forums/forum/9-photography/ More input from the members of this community site for artists and photographers will always be appreciated! Thank you for that, Delmus! 'All good advice. By the way... If any logged-in member is browsing this articles section of the site and they find that they keep getting logged out... Just try hitting the "refresh" button on your browser. That should solve the problem... (My apologies for the inconvenience but I am not a software developer - just a struggling website owner. We will get this thing sorted out one day or another!!)

Please feel free to start a blog here at artfreaks.com - And don't worry about keeping up with it! Just post whenever you are in the mood and you have the time. (Just like my own blog... sometimes I don't update it from one year to the next. It doesn't matter - it's not going anywhere!!) I think it is much better to just post something when you are in the right frame of mind and you have something to say... Here at artfreaks.com, there is no pressure to do anything. It's one of the benefits of belonging to a website that has a very lazy owner!! ?

Thanks very much for your contribution to artfreaks.com. Your insights and the sharing of your knowledge are greatly appreciated! I would just like to add my own two pennies worth... In my own personal opinion, gained after my own experience, I don't think that the exercises described in the book are complicated at all. They are very easy to do and, again - in my own personal opinion - well worth the time and the effort! Of course, there is always something else to do, with which we can use our time more effectively... I think that most of us would be quite hard-put to use our drawing skills to save the planet, for instance?!! However, if you do choose to spend some of your time learning how to draw, I do think that the time spent doing some of the exercises in the book would be very well spent. Some of those exercises in Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain were a real revelation to me! Hey... I even managed to do a reasonably passable self-portrait!! Number 1, below, was literally my first ever attempt at a self-portrait and number 2 was the result of my efforts after doing the "upside down" drawing exercise...

A good bit of advice there, from Jennifer. Jennifer Blekinsopp is an expert artist, so she is well-worth listening to! As Jennifer says, fixatives are the key to painting in layers, when doing pastel painting. But you really do need to get hold of a top quality fixative, if you want to maintain the vibrancy of the colours of your pastels. Note, also, that Jennifer does not fix the final layer. I am with her all the way on that one...

Studying the work of past masters is a great way to improve your art but first, you have to learn the basics... Find a good art class, if you can. It's a great way of getting to meet like-minded people too. There are so many good books out there too. Buy a few and find one that you like - and then work your way through it from cover to cover. Then... Branch out on your own! Let your imagination fly. Experiment. And come up with your own style!
