Amazing. They built bridges to last, in those days... We have had to replace the entire bridge decks on two of the bridges on the GCR - and undertaken extensive refurbishment works on a third one - all within the City of Loughborough. (These were constructed during the last 2 or 3 years of the 19th century...) So we have gone from 500 years, (for an old stone-built bridge); to 170 plus years; to 100 plus years - for the life span of a bridge. To... what? 50 years? If we are lucky? -
