  1. I'd love to have my own little art gallery. But it would be more of a free coffee shop for friends, rather than a commercial enterprise... I can't even cover my costs with websites - let alone think about making any money out of a physical art gallery.

I love art galleries in Manila. The ones I have been to have friendly staff/owners and they are relaxing places to visit - and I've never been presured into buying anything.

  2. I just changed a few settings in the Downloads module:

    1) Full Members should now be able to upload files directly, without having to wait for Admin approval

    2) It should now actually be possible for Full Members to set a price on their paid downloads. (Needless to say, an Admin can download for free. This is necessary in order to check the file for content/viruses or whatever...) So you might see the odd download showing-up in the stats and start wondering why you didn't get paid for it. If you have files already uploaded, it should also now be possible for you to edit them and set a per download price. Like I said in an earlier post... Let me know how you get on with this...

    3) I have reduced the screenshot image maximum file size from 1250Kb down to 350Kb. You will want to keep your screenshots on the small size to prevent them form being used instead of the Full High Resolution Download - which is what you get paid on!

  3. At least, former Chief Justice of the Philippines, Renato Corona was finally thrown out of office.

    wikipedia.org/wiki/Impeachment_of_Renato_Corona

    And that was a start.

But, so far, it is a very long way away from Justice.

Yes, it was a start. (Or it would have been, if the Filipino people were prepared to see this national disgrace through to the bitter end...) But what about the millions of dollars (and pesos - not to mention non-cash assets,) that Corona did not declare in his Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth? Is he now going to pay tax on that lot? Where did he get all that money? Can he prove that even one percent of it was aquired in legally-gotten gains?

Arghhh...!! The forgiving nature of the Filipino people. "He has suffered enough by losing his job and being banned from holding public office for the rest of his life. Move on. FORGET!" There are other newer and more exciting things to worry about, than seeking justice for what the Chief Justice of the Philippines done to his country - and to the very name of the law and justic in his own country?

One of the none too small problems with that, is that there will be no real progress in the Philippines until we start to see something even remotely resembly justice in the Philippines.

  4. Great website you have got there! I'd also suggest uploading a representative sample of your work here at ArtFreaks.com - just to generate more interest among our own members and the many regular guest visitors to this site. If you are planning to try selling downloads of your work in the Downloads module, make sure that you only post low resolution, (preferably water-marked,) copies of your work in the Gallery

  5. As a Full Member of ArtFreaks.com, you can also upload high resolution image files of your work in the Downloads module - and then charge an amount, (which you set,) for every time someone downloads a copy of your file. The person who has downloaded your file can then use the file for making a high quality print of your art.

The link to the Downloads module is in the main navigation bar at the head of (almost) every page in the site. (Depending on your screen resolution, it might be under the "More" tab.)

ArtFreaks.com takes 10% of whatever you decide to charge, every time payment is made for downloading one of your files. (This simply helps to offset some of our running costs...)

It costs absolutely nothing, other than a bit of your time, to give this new feature of ArtFreaks.com a try.

Tip: Upload a small, low-resolution and preferably water-marked screenshot with each high resolution file upload, so that people can see what they are getting.

At the time of writing, you can upload image files of up to 30Mb in the Downloads module.

  6. Thanks for your interest in ArtFreaks.com
Here's another site that you could try:

Take a look at ArtWanted.com. They have a free entry-level membership if you just want to try-out the site and if you like them, you can always go for a paid membership package that would allow you to sell high quality prints of your work on line. (AW handle getting your prints made, shipping, billing etc. so it's really no hassle...)

  7. And here is the background as to why the new date of June 12 was chosen for Philippine independance day:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_Declaration_of_Independence

In fact, Filipinos are not really celebrating the day when the US graunted them full independence... They are actually celebrating their Declaration of Independence in 1898

In my experience, even many Filipinos get confused over this issue. I remember well the hullabaloo in 1998 when the Philippines was supposedly celebrating 100 years of 'independence!!??!!!!!!' :acute:

  8. Thanks for starting your new topic and I hope that some of the members will be able to find the time to reply also...

For myself, I paint purely for enjoyment.

It has been a while since I managed to reach a 'state of flow' during a painting session... That was a long time ago, when I was less busy during my leave periods from my job at sea - and I could afford the time to really get in to it. But I still enjoy painting whenever I do get the time.

I am lucky in that I am able to rent a vacant property right next to where I live. It is mainly for my dogs, (two Siberian Huskies - not the easiest of dogs to look after in the Philippines!) The dogs have 'the run' of the yard and, of course, I have got the house itself as my studio. So far, I have only painted in pastels and I enjoy the media so much, I don't see that changing any time soon. The floor or my 'studio' is tiled, so the mess and dust from my pastel painting is very easy to clean-up - and I course, I can just leave everything 'as is' when I run out of time - and just come back to it at a later date. Sometimes, when I am away at sea and then other things take up my time when I do finally get home, a painting can be sitting there for up to 6 months in various stages of completion.

  10. Today, I managed to get started on a new pastel painting. (Apart from finishing-off another one that I started last year sometime, this is my first art of 2012!!)

Having just about run out of excuses, to put-off starting something new; I attached a blank sheet of paper to my board. I then sat there and just stared at it, refusing to leave my studio until a scene came into my mind and pastel had been applied to paper.

In the absence of a scene that I could visualize and wanted to paint, I was fully planning to just start applying sweeping lines and colours to the paper and give abstract art a try! Happily, though, a fairly simple scene did occur to me and I am glad to say that I subsequently spent a couple of quite satisfying hours actually painting again!

This was the result of my efforts - done purely from my own imagination...)

It is called "Window With a View"

  11. It is a waste of time (and expensive art materials,) in trying to force yourself to paint when you are not in the mood.

Here are a few personal tips on getting oneself motivated and finding the time to do some art:

    1. Have a source of income other than art, so that you can paint when you feel like it - not just when you need money for food, rent and beer! :drinks:

    2. Have a bit of space, (a spare room, well-lit garage - or even just a corner of the living room if you are not lucky enough to have your own studio,) where you can leave all of your gear out. That way, when the mood strikes, you will not have the bother of getting all your art materials and accoutrements out before you can even start. This is a great way of maximizing your precious painting time...

    3. Unplug the computer!

    4. Unplug the TV

    5. Put on some nice music.

    6. Take the dogs for a walk first. Get them tired-out - and then you can concentrate on your art!

    7. Open a can of cold beer or a bottle of nice red wine.

    8. Get some painting done before you fall asleep!

  12. Kid's funnies

JACK (age 3) was watching his Mom breast-feeding his new baby sister... After a while he asked: 'Mom why have you got two? Is one for hot and one for cold milk?'

MELANIE (age 5) asked her Granny how old she was.. Granny replied she was so old she didn't remember any more. Melanie said, 'If you don't remember you must look in the back of your panties. Mine say five to six.'

STEVEN (age 3) hugged and kissed his Mom good night 'I love you so much that when you die I'm going to bury you outside my bedroom window.'

BRITTANY (age 4) had an ear ache and wanted a pain killer. She tried in vain to take the lid off the bottle. Seeing her frustration, her Mom explained it was a child-proof cap and she'd have to open it for her. Eyes wide with wonder, the little girl asked: 'How does it know it's me?'

SUSAN (age 4) was drinking juice when she got the hiccups. 'Please don't give me this juice again,' she said, 'It makes my teeth cough..'

DJ (age 4) stepped onto the bathroom scale and asked: 'How much do I cost?'

CLINTON (age 5) was in his bedroom looking worried when his Mom asked what was troubling him, he replied, 'I don't know what'll happen with this bed when I get married. How will my wife fit in it?'

MARC (age 4) was engrossed in a young couple that were hugging and kissing in a restaurant. Without taking his eyes off them, he asked his dad: 'Why is he whispering in her mouth?'

TAMMY(age 4) was with her mother when they met an elderly, rather wrinkled woman her Mom knew. Tammy looked at her for a while and then asked, 'Why doesn't your skin fit your face?'

JAMES (age 4)was listening to a Bible story. His dad read: 'The man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city but his wife looked back and was turned to salt.' Concerned, James asked: 'What happened to the flea?'

And the Sermon that this Mom will never forget...

One Sunday sermon... 'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust...' He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'
