  1. The Red Squirrel Trail is a cycleway and footpath on the Isle of Wight. Between Shanklin and Wroxall the path follows the old railway (which closed in 1966) before diverting away. Sadly the remaining old railway route onto the terminus in Ventnor is largely inaccessible and/or built over.
  2. On the Red Squirrel Trail just outside Shanklin, a long disused Fogman’s Hut stands on the approach to Shanklin where the “Distant” Signal would have stood. In foggy weather, the Fogman would place an audible explosive device called a “Detonator” on the rails to warn the Driver of a train they were approaching a “Stop Signal.” This type of regulation ceased on the British railway network many years ago, but there are many of these old huts still standing!
  3. Returning to Havenstreet Shed on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway for a short break from train working and re-coaling.

  4. Taken from Bembridge Fort on Culver Down on the Isle of Wight, the Sunset and its dramatic rays are seen out to the West of the Island.

  5. HMS Queen Elizabeth, one of the UK Royal Navy’s 2 x Aircraft Carriers moves gently through the Solent past her home port of Portsmouth to carry out sea trials off the Isle of Wight in the English Channel.

  6. Victoria of Wight is the largest and newest Wightlink vessel on the cross Solent car ferry between Portsmouth Gunwharf and Fishbourne on the Isle o& Wight. She is seen here docking at Fishbourne on a lovely Sunny day on the 11:00 sailing from Portsmouth ready for the 12:20 crossing back.

  7. Rain is still evident across the Solent, but all is calm across Sandown Bay looking towards Culver.

  8. Culver Down is a cliff at the Eastern side of the Isle of Wight. Heavy rain over the city of Portsmouth (north of Culver and across the Solent) and sunshine from the Isle of Wight creates a rainbow over the cliff.

  9. The photographer was so keen to get the picture of the Red Admiral that he failed to notice the Honey Bee sharing the experience!

  10. It’s 06:35 and the Sun has just peeped over the English Channel. The view is from Shanklin Chine at Shanklin on the Isle of Wight.

  11. Moving down onto the Esplanade on Shanklin Seafront, the Sun has now climbed higher on a beautiful morning. Sadly the beautiful morning didn’t last as heavy rain and thunder became the prevailing conditions later in the day!

  12. Shortly before Sunrise, the sea of the English Channel looks a beautiful and dramatic calm.

  13. A very stormy day with a Gale Force 8 wind blowing in off the English Channel (the photographer had real issues standing in the wind and stabilising the camera!) in this view above Blackgang Chine looking across to The Needles on the far Western tip Isle of Wight.

  14. The Sun rises across the Mediterranean with the city of Benidorm just to left. The temperature has already started climbing and will peak at 36 x Degrees later in the day!

  15. The Sun has recently risen, and lights this Line 1 Service from Luceros Station in Alicante on the way to Benidorm where it will finish its journey in about and hour and 15 x minutes. The train is just approaching the Carrabiners stop on Playa Muchavista

  16. A short lived narrow gauge railway used to make its way across the Hogmoor Inclosure for military purposes. After closure and dismantling in the early years of the 20th Century, the route returned to nature, but is still clearly visible. Rowan Ash with berries, Oak and Scots Pine trees along with ferns and gorse now line the old route seen here looking towards the setting Sun.

  17. The former Army training ground of the Hogmoor Inclosure was given over to public open space in 2016. The traditional rugged English Heathland is seen here during the late evening.

  18. A rare sunny July day sees the sun shining through the Beech tree leaves in the Hogmoor Inclosure.

  19. Hunslet Tank Engine Number 98 “Royal Engineer” has arrived from Wooton at Smallbrook Junction. It has now run round its train and is awaiting the Signal to draw forward and then shunt back to return and couple to its train in the platform. This is on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway! The weather looks nice, but the wind was unseasonably cold for July 2024 with several heavy rain showers rattling through during the day!

  20. The Hogmoor Inclosure is a beautiful area of heathland in Hampshire England which after years of military use, was given over to the local council in 2016. The Inclosure is the home to many protected species of animals and one of these are bats. This is the Hogmoor Bat Roost at Sunset on a beautiful late Summer’s evening. This location also appears in this gallery in a shot taken in 2020.

  21. This is the County boundary entering into West Sussex from Hampshire at Hammer. 3 x Counties meet in the locality but the actual boundary with the county of Surrey exists in the nearby forest to the North East. In the background of this shot, the incline to the railway bridge over the London to Portsmouth line can be seen.

  22. There are over 40 x Counties in England. Just outside Haslemere, 3 of those come together in the village of Hammer. This is a picture of the sign coming from West Sussex into Hampshire. For a short time, this area had a sign saying “Hammer Bottom” which people kept stealing because of the innuendo!

  23. A beautiful action shot of a Magpie caught on the Home CCTV of the author in Hampshire, England. Wonder if Alfred Hitchcock is interested! 😃
