Cruise ship Hanseatic Nature is moored alongside HMS Belfast in the Pool of London. Looking downstream in the Sunshine, Tower Bridge can be viewed in this busy river scene. The site of Wroxall Station between Shanklin and Ventnor was closed in 1966 and the railway lifted. All that remains now the bridge carrying Castle Street over the old railway and part of the Station buildings (not seen and behind the photographer).

Under an old bridge on the Red Squirrel Trail, two old “Chairs” that once held rails onto sleeper now rust away in silence.

The Red Squirrel Trail is a cycleway and footpath on the Isle of Wight. Between Shanklin and Wroxall the path follows the old railway (which closed in 1966) before diverting away. Sadly the remaining old railway route onto the terminus in Ventnor is largely inaccessible and/or built over.

On the Red Squirrel Trail just outside Shanklin, a long disused Fogman’s Hut stands on the approach to Shanklin where the “Distant” Signal would have stood. In foggy weather, the Fogman would place an audible explosive device called a “Detonator” on the rails to warn the Driver of a train they were approaching a “Stop Signal.” This type of regulation ceased on the British railway network many years ago, but there are many of these old huts still standing!

Culver Down is a cliff at the Eastern side of the Isle of Wight. Heavy rain over the city of Portsmouth (north of Culver and across the Solent) and sunshine from the Isle of Wight creates a rainbow over the cliff.

Moving down onto the Esplanade on Shanklin Seafront, the Sun has now climbed higher on a beautiful morning. Sadly the beautiful morning didn’t last as heavy rain and thunder became the prevailing conditions later in the day!

Mediterranean Sunrise on the Costa Blanca, Spain

The Sun has recently risen, and lights this Line 1 Service from Luceros Station in Alicante on the way to Benidorm where it will finish its journey in about and hour and 15 x minutes. The train is just approaching the Carrabiners stop on Playa Muchavista

A short lived narrow gauge railway used to make its way across the Hogmoor Inclosure for military purposes. After closure and dismantling in the early years of the 20th Century, the route returned to nature, but is still clearly visible. Rowan Ash with berries, Oak and Scots Pine trees along with ferns and gorse now line the old route seen here looking towards the setting Sun.

Hunslet Tank Engine Number 98 “Royal Engineer” has arrived from Wooton at Smallbrook Junction. It has now run round its train and is awaiting the Signal to draw forward and then shunt back to return and couple to its train in the platform. This is on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway! The weather looks nice, but the wind was unseasonably cold for July 2024 with several heavy rain showers rattling through during the day!
